Seaplane Sudden Stop; full reverse thrust after touchdown! :)

Canadair CL415T sudden stops into the water by using its reversals. Looks so unreal that made me tink in a fail for a while.

  5. Actually, canadairs are built like ships on the bottom, so they can easily float on the water. I saw one doing the exact same thing here in Croatia when his gears malfunctioned, so he had to land on the sea.

  11. I don’t know how many landings buishuiler has seen, but I personlly have seen hundreds of seaplanes land, specifically the Grumman G-21 Goose, and I can tell you that, yes, this is a landing with the extra application of reversing the props. Nothing unusual about this.

  13. Normal landing for this airplane (on the water) does not include that degree of reverse.

  17. It’s CL415, not 215 and yes it was short. Very obviously put it into beta mode. Why? dunno that, but it was short.

  19. when u release the throttle on a boat how fast does it slow down? works the same on a float plane

Seemed okay to me. You should be on some land based carriers, dancing from side to side that have scared me so vey much more than that. Yeah, I get it. You have seen prettier, but “crash” ? is far far from what I just saw. Just saying.

Cascade Aerospace, Canada, offers CL-215 to CL-215T engine retrofits using the Bombardier kit and Pratt & Whitney Canada PW123AF engines and is currently the only conversion kit installer in the world

  27. your right aeroyt..This one has the turbo-prop engines(cl-415) that allows it to use reverse thrust..Cant do that with the 215s radials

  33. Well… I have seen many, but this is an air show exhibition, ant they where showing STOL an this is the Short Landing!!!

These guys are firefighters, and they do some amazing things with the Canadair… My my hats off to them and their service!!!

  35. Ignore the bullshiter-1 And Gagass. I thought it was neat, did not know that they would put reversers on a FB and get that reaction from the water.. Reminds me of my 50 Ford blowing a hose at speed… That would be fifty years ago..

  41. As he was landing, he pulled the throttles back to Idle. When he touched down, he went into full reverse thrust. No secret, no mystery.

  43. This does not look like it has Turboprops?
If it doesn’t then It can’t be prop reverser.
Only turbo props and jets have reversers

  61. For the armchair aeronautical engineers on here the DC-6 and DC-7 had piston engines with reverse thrust. It’s not the engine that reverses but the pitch on the prop that is reversed.

  65. Uh just a guess here but it seems to me he stopped because his right wing hit the water … >_>

  67. At 42 seconds there appears to be a boat in the water directly in front of them, I could be wrong but if kind of looks like he wasn’t looking far enough in front of him and all of a sudden he sees a boat in his path, when he sees the boat he deploys the reversers in an attempt to stop before the collision.

  71. A few piston engine aircraft had reverse thrust. Time and power limited as there was little to no engine cooling while in reverse.

Most turboprop aircraft have reverse thrust. Engine cooling not an issue.
What got me with this was all the spray kicked up. I hope that wasn’t salt water be ingested into the engines. Make sure the get a real good wash afterwards.

Not quite sure why you had to subject the engines and airframe to that landing when you had plenty of water

Использование водной глади в авиации это довольно перспективное направление и сегодня!

  81. This is what is called a “maximum performance stop”.

Unless you have any information to the contrary, I suspect it was a training mission, with practice of this manoeuvre a priority for the session.

  82. Canadairs have only brakes, it doesnt have thrust reverse? But hey, excellent video! 🙂

  83. Victoria Pendleton

    So ??

  84. No, not a crash, but great vid TUCKIE10, thanks. Don’t know why I landed here, but it’s all good. For those still debating the model (215/215T/415?), clearly it’s a 215T or 415 making use of a serious amount of Beta. Prob’ly felt like coming to a stop on wet sand.

If you want to see why Canadian operators really appreciate the twin turbine configured amphib/float plane, check any vid of a Twin Otter (DHC-6) operating on floats. Using differential thrust on the water allows an experienced pilot 360° mobility to turn, rotate on the spot, reverse, crab, ferry, pull alongside a dock in winds and water currents that stop single engine ops on water.

  85. I can’t tell if the props went to negative prop pitch, but there is an aspect of floatplanes that might not be understood, and it’s universal to everything in the water. Above a certain speed, the aircraft, essentially a boat, will ride on the top of the water. It needs to get up there to take off. The opposite happens on landing. It starts with riding on top of the water, and as the speed decreases, it reaches a tipping point where the body of the flying boat sinks into the water, adding a lot more friction and slowing the aircraft much faster than when it was on top. In the video, you can see the hull of the aircraft pitch up just as it reaches that point of sinking deeper into the water where the friction kicks in. Water is 1000 times more dense than air, so this provides a stopping action for most floatplane operations.
