Christopher Short, son of aggressor commander Michael Short, piloted that Thunderbolt. Well he landed safely near Skoplje in Macedonia (not Albania)…unfortunately
Yup… Survivable plane, extremely resilient, and successful. Created with an assistance, from the best Nazi «Stuka» pilot from WWII Germany (brought to the USA)… It was good thing, for the aimed pilot, that Kosovo is small part of Serbia, size as one bigger city in the USA, so with gliding only, without engines, from minimal allowed ceiling at a time of 5000 meters (15.000 ft), You could get out to a friendly territory (Macedonia, Albania, Bosnia, etc.). Even with parachute only option, if You catapult, and good wind… In any case, great plane! Great design…I will never understand why USA remove it from its own arsenal!? By my opinion, needed even to improve the design, and leave it defend it’s ground troops, marines, etc. As I understood, all veterans were delightful with its help on the battlefields…only apearence of the airplane, increased morale multiple times…F-35 will not arrive ever near by … There is no such thing as universal, multitasking machine! Not for shaving, cooking, driving, flying… Somebody obviously wanted to justify enormous money spent for new projects… But the truth is somewhere else… Not more in the middle… Far away
..far, far… No more «gliding to the friendly field..» .. more looks like «ditch in Your own mud…» (Didn’t want to use heavier words … «Mud» is more than enough 😉
